NOTE: *** Contains Spoilers *** Watch the fucking movie before reading this post.
This is the first movie which I feel does not really do justice to the concept that it is based on. Let me explain what I mean: Over the past few months, I have come to believe that every human being within himself has a certain inner desire, the satisfaction of which propels him. Doing it brings him an amazing calm. It may even bring him a mixture of pain and pleasure. This is not exactly the religious precept that God gives everyone a “purpose”.
Not every human being tries to do or even knows the deep purpose for which they exist. Maybe, because they are not blessed with having the choice or maybe because they willfully don’t do the right thing. They make excuses for themselves saying that they will do it one day. Some live their life just fine, happily getting married, breeding, working. Others live their life haunted, miserable as to whether what they are doing is right, worrying about what they should be doing, what they could be doing.
How does all this relate to the movie? Why, it shows a beautiful way to deal with one’s problems. Tim Smith kills seven people. He is wracked with guilt, his perfect little world that he has worked so hard for has become meaningless. Most people in this scenario would either a) Continue to live life, maybe help 700 or 700000 people. b) Not be wracked with guild. or c) Commit Suicide. Tim Smith deals with it in a way that is to me most mathematically symmetrical. He wants to die and he wants to help people, so he kills himself in a way so as to help seven people live marginally better lives. Personally, I believe that suicide is a personal choice. I also believe that most who do it are fucking cowards. It should be done only by those who can look themselves in the eye and say that I have cleared the tab can go die now in peace. I didn’t think that was possible in real life until I came across this storyline.
POST SCRIPTUM: The concept is not really original though. There are many who suddenly decide to satisfy some perceived debt by actions that lead to their debt. But no where have I seen this concept as beautifully presented as in this storyline.
POST POST SCRIPTUM: The movie could have been modified and made so much better…Oh well…Life…Fuck It..:-)
